In a nutshell, how can I help?

  • Kitties are worth every penny, but they are expensive.  Donation checks can be made out to LICK and sent to the address above.

  • An easy way to donate food or supplies is to leave a credit at Petsmart, or the store of your choice, or to purchase a gift certificate and make it out to LICK.

  • Volunteers are most welcome.  No matter what your skill or interest, your contribution will  will be valued and appreciated at LICK.

Overview

Supporting LICK can be done in numerous ways. While financial donations are always greeted with a glee bordering on giddiness, and volunteers are treated almost reverently, there are other, more creative, ways to help out as well. For instance, we have one fantastic lady who picks up the shelter’s laundry once a week and returns it to us clean and folded. And she also logs in all our expense receipts. Another comes by every Sunday to dispense catnip and lots of individual attention to help the shy kitties become adoptable. Still another bakes a double batch of cookies every weekend, bags the, 4 tp a bag, then sells the bags at work for a dollar each. (She has been able to give LICK approximately $14 a week year round from her cookie sales – and her co-workers are happy, if not thin. And then, of course, there is the WebMistress who put together this website for us!

Volunteer Services Needed

Following are the services we really need right now.  If you can help us out, or if you have a creative idea of your own, please contact us ASAP.

  • Cleaners: An hour or two of your time spent cleaning litter pans, sweeping the floor, etc. would be immensely appreciated.  It’s not glamourous, but it is vital. And you get to have a lot of kitties following you around as you work.  You can volunteer on a weekly, monthly, or as-needed basis.  Must be 18 or older – no exceptions.

  • Outdoor Pen Keeper:  During the summer, we need an individual to sweep and hose down the 2 outdoor pens once or twice a week.

  • Vet Transport: We need people to drop off and pick up kitties with vet appointments at Mays Landing Veterinary Hospital.

  • Foster Families:  Do you have room in your home (a spare bathroom, bedroom, or laundry room work fine) to temporarily house a kitty with special needs.  This could be a frightened cat who needs quiet, patient, individual attention to become adoptable, a cat recovering from surgery, or small kittens -  with or without a Mom – who need a quiet space to grow strong and socialized.

  • Additional Laundry-Doers:  We have about 8-10 loads a week and only 2 people doing it all.  We need another person or 2 to pick up and drop off a couple of bags a week, any day.  Laundry detergent and bleach provided.  (These are blankets, floor mats, towels, etc.)

  • Rescuers:  This would be sporadic.  Sometimes it takes a while to trap a cat in need of rescue.  We need individuals to transport the humane trap, set it up, and stay with it.  (We never leave the traps unattended.)  Sometimes it works on the first try; sometimes it takes multiple attempts.  Call for more information.

  • Fundraisers:  It takes time and know-how to pull off a successful fundraiser. If you have both, please, please call us!  We currently do bake sales, craft fairs, and the annual Meow Mixer dinner dance.  Any additional ideas?

  • Crafters:  Any cat-related items that we could sell at craft fairs would be greatly appreciated.   These could be items for cats or cat-people.

For those who aren’t able to donate their time but would like to help with monetary or supply donations, please note the following needs:

Donations Needed

On a weekly basis, LICK uses approximately 250 lbs of kitty litter (we use Oil-Dri from Sam’s Club.  It’s cheap at $3.69 for 40 lbs. and it works well), 100 lbs. of dry food (Exceed dry food, also from Sam’s Club, at $8.99 a bag), a case of canned food (also used for humane trapping during rescue efforts), countless paper towels, and Clorox Ready-Mop supplies (disposable mop pads and Clorox Ready-Mop floor cleaner).  During kitten season, which is just about year-round anymore, we also need canned kitten food, premium dry kitten food, and KMR.  Also, we have a tremendous amount of veterinary medical expenses for spaying/neutering, vaccinations, FeLV/FIV screening, lab work, dentals, antibiotics, Accarex ear mite treatment, eye ointment, Advantage or Frontline flea and tick control, deworming medication, and the occasional surgery.

Here’s how you can help with the above:

  • Monetary donations made out to LICK.  (All money goes directly for the care of the cats.  We are a completely volunteer organization and have no payroll

  • Gift cards for PetsMart or gift certificates at other area pet supply stores (English Creek Supply, Arnold’s, Pet Pros, Butterhof’s).

  • Payment-on-account at Cologne Animal Hospital and Ocean Heights Animal Hospital.

  • Supply donations of the items listed above.
